Free Library

Our first free library opened in June 2024 and is currently located in Gion, Kyoto (see Google maps link below). 

What is a Free Library?

A free library is an unmanned public bookcase, typically outdoors, where people can donate and swap books anytime and at no cost. Unlike traditional libraries, books are not logged into a system and there is no expectation of returning them to the library. The general rule is “take a book, give a book” to keep the library abundant and promote neighborly book exchange.　

【図書館】2024年6月にKBS初となるFree Library (フリーライブラリ：無人図書館)が祇園に設置されました。世界各地では、公共の場にFree Libraryと言う名の本棚が設置され、気軽に立ち寄れる、自由利用図書館の役割を果たしています。そこでは、読み終えた本を寄付したり、代りに読みたい本を無料で持ち帰ることができます。正式な図書館と違い、本を登録する必要はありませんし、返却する義務もありません。唯一の決まりは、「一冊を持ち帰る代わりに、一冊を置いていくこと」です。そうすることで、本棚に本がなくなることなく、本の交換が可能になります。京都市内にFree Libraryの数を少しづつ増やしていく計画をしています。
