Kyoto Book Swap

Kyoto Book Swap (KBS) is a project started by Mayuko Nakamura in September 2023. The KBS initiative aims to celebrate a love of books by way of book swap events and free libraries, bringing readers together and promoting neighborly book exchange.

2023年9月より始まったプロジェクト『Kyoto Book Swap』 (KBS)は、Book Swap (ブックスワップ)やFree Library (フリーライブラリ) を通じて、本と本、 人と本、人と人を繋げることをミッションとしています。

How KBS Started

When Mayuko moved to Kyoto from Brooklyn, NY, she came with only what she could fit into two suitcases. Unfortunately, that meant parting with most of her books. Rather than repurchasing, Mayuko wanted to reignite her love of reading in a different way. Why buy and create more waste if we could simply pass on what we’re done reading? Could there be a public place to house the books and invite other book lovers to swap books for free? 

This was when Mayuko made it her mission to create a free library for English books in Kyoto, inspired by the little free libraries she frequented in Brooklyn.

ニューヨーク・ブルックリンから京都に移り住む時、2つのスーツケースに詰められる荷物は限られていて、ほとんどの本を手放すことになりました。日本にいながら、英語の本を読みたいと思っても、書店には英文書籍のあまり並んでいない現実と、本も含む、物を必要以上に増やすことに違和感を感じていました。そこで思い出したのが、ブルックリンではよく見かける、数多いFree Libraryの本棚。旅行者、地元民に問わず、本の交換ができるコミュニティを京都でも築きたいという想いから始まったプロジェクトです。
